Miami's hurricane season means power outages are a fact of life. Whether it's a tropical storm, a broken opener, or a dead battery — knowing how to open your garage door manually could save you from being trapped inside or locked out of your home. Here's exactly what to do. See also our emergency garage door repair if you need professional help right now.

Before You Start — Safety Warning

⚠️ IMPORTANT SAFETY RULES
  • !NEVER pull the red emergency cord when the door is open — the door could fall suddenly and cause serious injury
  • !If your spring is broken, DO NOT attempt to manually open the door — it will be extremely heavy and dangerous
  • !If the door feels extremely heavy when lifting manually, stop immediately and call BestServicex at (786) 473-8588

How to Open Your Garage Door Manually — Step by Step

1

Find the Red Emergency Cord

Look for a red rope hanging from the opener trolley (the part that moves along the rail). This is your manual release cord. It should be clearly visible hanging from the center rail of your garage.

2

Pull the Red Cord Down and Back

Pull the red cord firmly downward and toward the back of the garage. You'll hear a click — this disconnects the door from the opener trolley so it can move freely.

3

Lift the Door Manually

Grab the door handle or the bottom of the door with both hands. Lift straight up until the door is fully open. The door should stay open on its own if the springs are working properly.

4

Secure the Door Open

If you need to leave the door open while you exit, make sure it stays up. A door with good springs will stay open by itself. If it starts to fall, your spring may be weak — call BestServicex.

5

Drive Your Car Out

Once the door is open and secured, drive your vehicle out carefully.

6

Reconnect the Opener When Power Returns

To reconnect: pull the red cord toward the door (forward), then press your opener button. The trolley will re-engage automatically. Or simply open and close the door with the opener — it will reconnect on its own.

How to Open Your Garage Door From Outside (Locked Out)

If you're locked outside and need to get in manually:

1

Look for the exterior emergency release

Some garage doors have a small lock cylinder on the outside, usually near the top center of the door. Insert the key and turn to release the emergency cord from outside.

2

If no exterior release exists

You'll need to call a locksmith or garage door technician. BestServicex can respond within 60–90 minutes anywhere in Miami-Dade or Broward County — call (786) 473-8588.

Miami-Specific Situations — When You'll Need This Guide

🌀

Hurricane & Tropical Storm Power Outages

Miami loses power frequently during hurricane season (June–November). Always know how to manually operate your garage door before storm season starts.

⚠️

Broken Garage Door Spring

A broken spring makes the door extremely heavy — often 150+ lbs. Do NOT attempt to lift manually. Call BestServicex immediately.

🔧

Opener Motor Failure

If the motor burns out or the opener malfunctions, manual release lets you use the door while waiting for repair.

🔋

Dead Battery Backup

If your opener's battery backup is dead during a power outage, manual release is your only option. Test your battery backup before hurricane season.
